Twenty local residents aged 50+ have improved their health, confidence and wellbeing thanks to the Stronger Shakers: Healthy Hearts programme, delivered by Bury Football Club Community Sports Trust with support from a Healthy Hearts grant award of £3,400.

The 15-week programme helped older adults take positive steps towards healthier lifestyles through a combination of gentle physical activity sessions and practical nutrition workshops. Designed to support people of all abilities, the programme created a welcoming environment where participants could improve their fitness, learn new skills and connect with others in their community.

Supporting Health, Confidence and Wellbeing

Throughout the programme, participants took part in:

  • Strength and balance sessions to improve stability and mobility
  • Chair-based cardiovascular exercise suitable for a range of abilities
  • Interactive nutrition workshops focused on healthy eating and lifestyle choices

Workshop topics included understanding food labels, meal planning, increasing fruit and vegetable intake, reducing salt and saturated fat consumption, and making affordable heart-healthy food choices.

Positive Engagement and Lasting Impact

The programme engaged 20 participants, with high levels of attendance and commitment throughout the 15 weeks. Many participants attended regularly, demonstrating strong enthusiasm for the activities and the supportive group environment.

Alongside increasing physical activity levels, the programme helped participants build confidence, gain knowledge about heart health and develop habits that can contribute to long-term wellbeing.

An equally important outcome was the opportunity for participants to meet new people, strengthen social connections and take part in activities at their own pace in an inclusive and supportive setting.

Looking Ahead

Following the success of the programme, participants will have opportunities to continue their health and wellbeing journey through ongoing community activities and fitness sessions. The project has created a sustainable pathway for continued participation, helping local residents stay active, connected and engaged in their communities.

The Stronger Shakers: Healthy Hearts programme demonstrates how targeted community support can empower people to make positive lifestyle changes, improve wellbeing and build stronger social connections that last beyond the life of the project.
