About the volunteer
What course are you studying, and at which college?
I’m currently studying Level 1 Travel and Tourism at Bury College.
How did you first hear about the volunteering opportunity?
I first discovered the opportunity through my college’s VLE system, where the role was advertised to students looking to gain real-world experience alongside their studies.
Finding the role
What support did you receive from your college when looking for a role?
My college provided me guidance on gaining work experience and encouraged me to take part in volunteering opportunities that support both personal development and future career goals. This helped me feel confident applying for a role that matched my interests.
What made you choose this volunteering opportunity?
I chose this role because I’ve always had an interest in healthcare, alongside a strong passion for sharing information and raising awareness through social media. This opportunity felt like the perfect mix of both allowing me to support an important cause while developing creative and professional skills.
The volunteering experience
What does your volunteering role involve?
I volunteer as Social Media Lead with Community Medics CIC. My role involves creating and scheduling content, reviewing social media statistics, communicating with the public online, planning campaigns, and supporting wider areas such as PR, branding, and recognition.
What have you enjoyed most so far?
I’ve really enjoyed getting to know other people within the organisation, working closely with the senior leadership team, and having the freedom to be creative while contributing to meaningful projects.
Have you learned any new skills or gained confidence in any areas?
Yes I’ve developed stronger communication skills, improved my organisation and planning abilities, and gained confidence in professional settings. I’ve also learned how to analyse engagement data and use it to shape content, which has been a completely new skill for me.
Impact and benefits
How has volunteering helped you personally, academically, or professionally?
Volunteering has helped me expand my connections, improve my social skills, and positively support my mental health. Professionally, it’s given me clearer career goals and practical experience that complements my college course, while helping me build a strong CV.
What difference do you feel your volunteering has made to the organisation or community?
I feel I’ve made a positive impact by helping strengthen the organisation’s online presence, improving communication with the community, and supporting awareness around important health and wellbeing topics. Being part of planning and delivering campaigns has helped the organisation reach more people and engage new volunteers.
Final reflections
What would you say to other students who are thinking about volunteering?
I’d say go for it. Volunteering is a great opportunity to gain experience, meet new people, build confidence, and discover what you enjoy. Even if you feel unsure at first, you learn so much along the way.
Is there anything else you’d like to share about your experience?
Volunteering has been genuinely life-changing for me. It’s helped me grow both personally and professionally and given me a real sense of purpose. I’m proud to be part of an organisation that makes such a difference in the community, and I’d encourage any student to consider volunteering if they get the chance.
